Sarah was one of the few friends I made while attending Baruch College. Initially, we did not talk to each other much. Mostly because we did not know each other and we did not have any friends in common to introduce us. It just happened by chance that we sat next to each other at some event that I cannot remember. We didn’t share any classes but we did have the same breaks on a few days. And so rather than studying alone, we kept each other company every Tuesday and Thursday for lunch. Much to my surprise, we got along pretty well.
It just so happened that later in the semester, she had to go to the Museum of Modern Art for a class and she invited me to come. I happily accepted and we had a great time. Later on, I had to watch a Broadway play for my theater class and so I returned the favor by inviting her to come with me. She also happily accepted and again we went to see Wicked. Though I should note that we were not dating. We were just friends.
Then came the day when I found out that I had been accepted to the University of Michigan. She was thrilled that I had been able to transfer but also told me that she would be sad to see me go. The months that followed were very bittersweet. We still studied in the library together and we still kept each other company every Tuesday and Thursday for lunch. However, I would periodically receive news about Michigan, which served as a constant reminder that I would not be at Baruch the following year.
We tried to keep in touch over the summer but she was busy with her job and so we didn’t spend a lot of days together. Fortunately, I was able to see her once right before I left New York and we were able to say our goodbyes. Well, we didn’t actually say goodbye. Rather, we agreed to see each other again some other time. Though we’ve rarely spoken since I’ve been here in Michigan.
